Gettin' Kinda Spendy

I don't know if it's all the cheap beer flowing around the Hill since the Democrats won (Republicans like to hide the 12 year old Macallen from their staff) or the promise of the influx of all that new blood up here, but I have gotten the itch to get some nice new makeup.

Which, honestly, is nothing new to me.

But the difference here is that I want to buy something pricey. Something worth the effort of spending time in a department store talking to salespeople. Something I can be proud to show off on my makeup tray or brag to my friends that it's just the "only thing I can wear anymore!!"

I'm contemplating getting the Cle de Peau concealer.

Oh yes. This baby clocks in with a price tag that would make a defense contractor swoon, outpricing my regular concealer by approximately 500%.

But it is also the stuff of legend.

Routinely mentioned in magazine copy as the best concealer you can buy (if you can afford it, of course) and recently mentioned as Alexis Bledel's favorite in Lucky Magazine. (Fine!! I just want to be Rory on Gilmore Girls. Sue me.)

But I have doubts.

First, is it REALLY worth the price of 19.04 double tall skim lattes from Starbucks?

Second, if I plan on spending that much money on something, shouldn't it ADD color to my face instead of blending it all in?

Third, can I truly expect anything to cover up the dark undereye circles which are bound to show up when I spend all of next January planning hearings?

Fourth, do you think the lady at the Cle de Peau counter would give me enough free swag for buying it to offset some of the cost?

Now, I have gotten a few other items from Cle de Peau and they are great (more to come in upcoming posts) but the balanced-budget girl in me balks just a little.

Help me out! Has anyone tried it? Is it worth my big splurge?

I'm thinking I may just have to pretend I work on Wall Street and just got a six-figure bonus, instead of Independence Ave and stealing binder clips from the government...

A good concealer, well-applied, is practically all a girl needs to look her best. Maybe there's some truth to what BB & others always say about "just use it where you need it," especially when it's 100B dollars.

I rally suggest MAC because it has much more coverage than clinique. I have tried the Studio Stick Concealer and it's very similar to Cle de Peau. Laura Mercier Secret Camoflauge is very good too.

Love your blog - I've added it to my Fab Reads on my blog. Hope you don't mind. lianecorinaldi.blogspot.com. I would go for the splurge it's fun to feel pretty but you are very right - why spend so much to blend? Keep up the fab job.

Just do it.

You know you want to, and you'll always feel like you should've just tried it.

I mean, don't you think Alexis Bledel probably gets Cle de Peu for free? And she still uses it anyway....

I've never tried it, but if it's as good as others say, then people will comment on your flawless, glowing skin. And isn't that worth more than the price?

I was thinking along similar lines, but in pricey foundation. I've heard great things about Giorgio Armani luminous silk & also the new YSL with the brush. Any thoughts/advice?

Doesn't the department store have testers, or samples? If you can try it risk free that way, then you can find out for yourself, right?

Thank you all for all the advice. I would try it in the store, but it always looks better when the makeup artist puts it on. I need to try at home with my own clumsy self. I think I might try out the MAC concealer first though, it sounds very promising....

As for foundation, THAT I would snag a sample and try at home. I would be more inclined to prefer the Armani to the YSL one, that brush just seems like a breeding ground for bacteria and you can't wash it.

But all this YSL talk is making me want the famed Touche Eclat...

Just buy it. You only live once, might as well be with a fabulous glow.

I was addicted to Sisley Botanical concealer for a while--I kept asking for samples, had friends ask for samples--it was more stress just trying to avoid the same people at the counters than it was to shell out the $80.

Oooh, good point Scarlett. I would guess that the stick concealor would last at least two years. A liquid, more like a year for fear of separation. Plus with the stick, you can always swab with an alcohol pad. Love alcohol pads.

And BabsieD, I totally know what you mean about avoiding the counter people! Definitely a reason to buy, to foster goodwill amongst the salespeople.

I've heard some positive things about Diorskin. How it makes you look "airbrushed" like in the mags. Any truth to that?

Did you see it was recommended again in this month's Allure?

Have you tried Clarins? (http://www.clarins.com/)

I recently went through the same makeup upgrade and was prepared to drop more than I typically do - but as it turns out, Clarins isn't actually too expensive. They also have all sorts of other products which are amazing. You should visit their counter at the Saks out at Tysons - the person who helped me spent about 40 minutes explaining their products, showing me which ones they love, while also pointing out which ones they didn't think were worth it (not something people usually tell you when they are on commission). You should take a look if you aren't already familiar with them.
