Ask CapHillBarbie: Cutting the Losses

That's right! After an absurdly long hiatus, here another edition of "Ask CapHillBarbie!" But this time I need all the locals in the house to pipe up to help out Delia who writes:

Being a Washingtonian for most of my life, I've borne witness to the trials and tribulations of the hairstyles of politicians, their wives, and other transplants while laughing to myself. The joke was thus: I already had a stylist. A stylist to end all other stylists. Colorist to color all others jealous. Then, three years ago, the joke was on me and he packed up and moved to Arizona under cover of night, and I have been lost ever since. Do you have any recommendations, or could you poll your beauty colleagues of DC to help me find one?

I totally understand the pain of losing a stylist. I used to trek up to NY for the most fabulous hair cuts until my stylist decided to pack it in and move to Iowa. Seriously? Iowa? What is going on here? Is there something in the corn there that makes people want to leave a place like New York? Can't we have it shipped? I mean, my strawberries probably come from Mars, what is so great about Iowa?

Wow, I was seriously bitter about that.

However, through lots of deep breathing, soul searching and alcohol, I have finally come to peace with it. I have fallen in love with my current stylist, Paul at Serenity Day Spa in Tenleytown. He gives a great cut, fantastic color and he's an awesome gossip. I have referred many a friend to him and no one has come away disappointed.

But I believe that there are many other talented stylists who have loyal clientele out there, so speak up! Help out a sister in need and let us know if you have a hair stylist who you can bear to part with, for even one open appointment...

question was heavily edited as I am a little punchy this early in the morning. And yes, I mean 10:30 a.m.

After years of going to a Stylist who had her own small shop, and having a different color everytime, I finally took the Washingtonian's recommendation and went to see Michael at Aquaticca Salon & Day Spa (he used to work at PR & Partners). He ONLY does color, and gave me the exact deep brown shade I imagined but didn't get the time before. He is absoloutely perfect and knows the meaning of such phrases as "well a litter darker but not really but not redish but definitely not black" and turns them into color perfection. Since he only does color, I go to Jerinae for my cut and love her just as much. I have referred 4 friends to her already and each loved her! The only downside is they are in Bethesda not in the city, but for a good cut & color its worth it.

Lauren at Toka in Penn Quarter is Amazing. And for color Faviola at Andre Chreky is good. But I try to avoid that place because it's stressfully busy rather than relaxing.

I am 1000000% committed to my stylist - Kelly Gorsuch, the co-owner of Urban Style Lab in Dupont. Literally, I've been seeing him for almost 10 years now, since he was at a ghetto Bubbles and I was broke and straight out of college. For color, I really like Claudia at USL as well, but Ramon is very good too, although more of a flake/personality.

Come on Iowa is not that bad. I live here and read you blog religiously that has to count for something. I have an amazing colorist and stylist. She is so amazing that I'm constantly asked where I go.

Ok, ok, ok. I apologize for the Iowa comments. I do love me some Tom Harkin, so I can't say it's all bad. It's just way too far to trek for a haircut.

As for the suggestions...keep 'em coming! You all are great!

Jae Woo has her own mini-shop at Lux (www.yourlux.com) in Bethesda. I've been with her nearly as long as I've been with H. Her cuts are fabulous and long-lasting. Can't speak for her color, though.

Thank you to everyone who has responded, I will be forever grateful! I will continue to check this post for additional rec.s or feedback.

Pat at PR Partners on K Street is fantastic - he does great color and cuts and really listens to his clients! He is also a whiz with thick hair.

Luigi at the Watergate Salon is worth every penny. I have actually been mistaken as a non-regular in my usual bars after going there with a Luigi haircut and color. He knows what looks good on you and he won't do something trendy if it doesn't work for you.

He rocks!

I highly recommend Demian at Demian's in Adams Morgan. He's one of those stylists who can look at your hair & know exactly what hair style would look best on you, no more searching for the correct terminology or pantomiming what you think might look good. He also does great color, though usually passes on the physical act of applying the color to another stylist - he mixes it himself, though. The other stylists at his salon seem to be great, as well, I doubt you'd get a bad cut/color here.

The very best stylist and colorist I have ever seen is Kris at Robert Andrew in Gambrills. It's a drive, but my girlfriend in Houston who loves Beautique, absolutely raved about her. She was right..Texas sweet and New York style.

I have to agree on Luigi!
He's been cutting, coloring and highlighting my hair for years and it's never looked better!!!
He's extremely professional and soooo busy! Worth every penny and the wait!
