Rules To Live By

In law school, we were taught that every question has the same answer:

It depends.

I firmly believe that when it comes to answering issues of legal significance, the slightest change in detail can drastic affect the response.

But when it comes to fashion, I enjoy stating things in absolutes.

Like my favorite:

Black tights go with everything.

EVERYTHING.

Seriously. From about mid October to late April, tights are my leg clothes of choice.

Frilly summer dresses? Pull on your trusty tights and chunky sweater and go.

Pencil skirts? Tights and a sharp jacket over a sexy secretary blouse and boogie.

That white cocktail dress? It's all about tights and black patent heels.

So here's my problem. I'm constantly on the hunt for the blackest, most opaque tights on the market. My current choice are the Assets line from Target, which are made by the Spanx people and consistently make you a full half size smaller. The only problem is that their magical body-morphing fabric extends to the mid-thigh area, making it difficult to wear them with a short skirt or dress.

I've heard that Wolford makes the creme de la creme but in These Economic Times, I think my husband might flip if I spent $40 on hosiery and tried to serve him ramen at dinner.

So help me out! What are the best black tights on the market?!?

I picked up some Hue tights at the Nordstrom Rack for something like $6. I've worn them a couple of times, and they're black enough for my purposes! I have also found good prices on good hosiery at Filene's Basement. I have a DKNY pair from there that are also dark and durable.

As crazy as it sounds, the George brand at Wal Mart is great. They even have one kind that promises not to turn sheer. And I know... they have lasted my entire pregnancy and unfortunately, they have been put to the test with major stretching. Plus, they are under $5, so you can buy a couple of pairs.

I'm with Mrs. Preppy. Low end is the way to go on tights. Wolford snag just as easily. I've had a pair of opaque Jockey's forever. They rock.

Totally agree with Melanie - they're cheap enough to buy a ton at once and circulate, and they're super comfy - I hate when there's too much control top.

Totally ridiculous, but i swear by the tights from Express. I bought them randomly once when i was desperate and now they are my go-to brand- plus they are often 2 for $20. Cant beat it!

I buy Forever 21's super-cheap "sweater tights" to wear on cold days. They are great for keeping my legs warm in the office.

I bought a pair of Target's Asset in black opaque and the control was great for a few wears but after 2 washes, it totally lost it's "spanx" factor. Not so pleased.

I swear by Old Navy's opaque tights. They're a good matte black - no shiny fibers. They're under $6, and as long as you line dry them, they last for years.

Leggs used to have legging shapers that were wonderfully dark and shaping, and came in capri and legging length, but I believe they're discontinued and I haven't found any that suit my purposes since. I'm so grateful I happened upon this blog, because now I have a few ideas in the tights department! :D

Ladies,

Simply Vera by Vera Wang at Kohl's makes THE BEST opaque black tights. They come in basic black as well as many black-on-black patterns, and of course other colors. They are affordable, and being Kohl's and all, they are ALWAYS on sale.

Worth a special trip or an online purchase, for sure.

I have to say that Smartwool makes some kick ass leggings if warmth is what you want. DKNY makes some sweet tights, too.

I'm a big fan of Hue too, can't beat the prices at Nordstrom Rack!

I've been on the hunt for completely opaque tights as well, and was also tempted by Wolfords (but resisted). I've worn 2 pairs of generic tights before, when I want them seriously opaque, and that works like a charm. However, I was so pleased to read through all the suggestions here - perhaps I won't have to continue wearing 2 pairs of sub-standard tights! :)

Sorry, this is a little late........ especially since your tights wearing season is coming to an end here pretty soon. (But there's always next year)

My friend (who's danced all her life) loves these. They're opaque and come in a bazillion colors.

I love the black opaque tights from Express. They are completely opaque and don't snag very easily. Sometimes Express has buy 1, get 1 50% off deals.
