Once...when I was little...I received the 64 pack of Crayola crayons. With the sharpener on the box. It was pretty much the highlight of my existence (and still is).
every child's dream come true
I get a similar feeling sometimes when I stand at a makeup counter. In particular at a MAC counter.
For some reason, MAC always scares me off just a touch. The sales people are often in very bright, expertly done makeup with dyed hair and tattoos. It makes me feel very preppy and vanilla. But they have the most fantastic selection of colors.
I recently sucked it up braved a trip to the MAC store in Georgetown where I discovered Shadesticks. A cross between a Crayola and those mechanical twist-up pencils, the creamy shadow is in a stick that you just swipe over your eye.
I was originally attracted to the bright eggplant color, but balked a little when I thought about how it would look to the LD when I flounce in on Monday with eyeshadow that made me look like I had been in a barfight. My salesperson saw the fear in my eyes and steered me towards to more neutral colors, Beige-ing and Fresh Cement. The former is a shimmery taupe color while the latter has more of a slate grey tone to it. Alone, the Beige-ing gives me a subtle, more innocent look, but layered together makes for a sophisticated daytime eye.
The best thing is that they seem particularly crease resistant. I know because I sat there yesterday in back to back boring briefings blinking (again with the alliteration! I know, it must stop) rapidly in an effort to stay awake with nary a crease.
I'm like them so much that I'm considering trying out the fearsome purple. Or maybe MAC would sell them in a set like Crayola. Or maybe I could stop snoozing during briefings.
Hey...it could happen.

I'm a huge fan of Bei-jing as well - it makes a great base. I currently only own one of the sticks, but your post made me wants to go out and buy more!
Quick question - do you use anything under your eye makeup to make it not crease (concealor, etc.)? I want to try this, but I swear every eyeshadow creases on me! Any tips?
Oops, meant "concealer" - I should know how to spell that!
oh, go back and get the eggplant - blend w/ some smokey greys, and no LD will even blink (but you'll know you have eggplant on your eyes!)
and crayons. i recently bought a box. all 64. haven't opened them yet. but will. someday. carefully.
I could have written the same thing- from the crayon to the fear of MAC. I keep promising myself that I will brave the SAs and go buy something. I owe it to my blog...
I usually use a dab of concealer on my eyelids, brush a little translucent powder, and then put on eyeshadow. i find it helps to "crease" problem. Also, they have this eyeshadow sticks at any drugstore, i think they are maybelline or covergirl, i am not sure. but they are great too! Good luck!
you can also use the shadestick as an eye primer, and apply a powder eyeshadow over it. the result lasts forever and has much more depth.
i especially love using the mac shadestick with the mac loose pigment - esp with iridiscent pigments.
Please start posting more often! Your blog gets me through the day up here on the Hill!
hi! first time poster here. i scored bei-jing in a holiday collection from '05 i think. great color. it worked well to make shadows stay and 'pop' for more vibrant color. however, i could never make sense of the other colors like green and purple, until i saw a downtown MA with crazy smoked eyes that were fabulous! what was she wearing? the eggplant color that you are speaking of with the new french gray from the danse collection. it looked amazing! i may go back to ask her to recreate the look on me. to experiment by myself, since i have the french gray, HIP by loreal has shade sticks too.
oh btw..@anon 5:38pm, concealer, shadesticks, or i'm new with the paints .. but that helped to make things stay in place also!
the eggplant is so scary for daytime if you dont use too much. just draw a fat line near your lashes and blend up for a subtle eggplant shimmer.
