So, I've Got this Bridge...

I simply don't get it.

And by "it" I am referring of course to "smart makeup" or makeup which adapts to your unique skin tone and changes to match it perfectly. All the magazines and Sephora stores have been hyping one product in particular. That's right Smashbox's O-Glow, I'm talking about you.

Now, let me be frank here. I am a HUGE sucker for all things new, cool, in nice packaging, etc. But this really smacks of the Emperor's new clothes.

The Sephora web page touts "the first intuitive blush, this clear gel reacts with your personal skin chemistry to turn cheeks the exact color you blush, naturally in just seconds! O-GLOW works on every skin tone, from the lightest to the darkest, to give everyone a naturally gorgeous glow. "

Uhhhh...okaaay.

It's intuitive. Like a pyschic. Or a mood ring. Or maybe a clear fuschia blush gel???

But you don't have to take my word for it. Check out personal experiences from The Beauty Addict and The Non Blonde.

Also, I'm skeptical of anything with goji berries. I once saw a Law & Order: Criminal Intent where a serial killer ate them for energy. I'm just saying.

Oh, and Almay Smart Shade? This post applies to you too. You are totally on notice.

I have a request - in a future post, would you please compile a list of your all time must have products? I try to remember during my Sephora trips, and often can't. I would seriously print it out and bring it with me. Your other tips are so great, so I trust your advice :). Thanks! -Fellow Capitol Hill Barbie

Three of us, so far. I like so many of their products that are actually really smart, but the fuchsia gel is beyond me.

i was intrigued at first, but then realized that i don't trust a product that purposefully irritates my skin to the point of redness (not to mention, a redness that lasts all day). thanks for the post!

There is no irritation to speak of; the color comes from the Red 27 dye that is microencapsulated inside the product. The capsules burst in response to pressure, and give that day-glo flush. Unfortunately, I found that once the coloring stains your skin, it stays there, only to make reappearances during/after showers and workouts.

Here's the thing. I tried some on my wrist the other day, just to see what it looked like. And as I watched it turn this very bright fuschia, I realized that my skin had NEVER turned that color in my life.

Plus, if you use powder foundation, how can you put it on top?

The first time I used it I laughed myself silly. The bright pink cheeks took me so back to the 80's and playing in my Mom's makeup. After a bit of playing around, I rather like it though. A DAB literally is all I need (very fair) and the flushed look is there without the clown effect. I have taken to just tapping a bit on the apples of my cheeks and using my powder blush to even out. IMHO it's so not worth the cost but I don't live near a Sephora and have to travel to go to one. So I made it work!

PS - It really reminds me of Gloss Blossom from Mark.

ok so i actually bought this about a week ago at sephora & just noticed your post on it. . .it actually is not irriating at all. . .in fact it made my skin smoother. and i do agree w the odd phenonmoen that it can conform to your skin tone but me & my friend (I am tan, while she is extremely pale) testes it and it looked fab on both of us! i dont know how they do it but hell it works and that is all that matters!

I bought this product a few weeks ago and actually like it a lot. I think it will be great for summer.

As for irritation, it doesn't irritate my skin at all...it's really silky smooth.

I also use powder foundation so I put it on with a blush brush. I put a small glob on my hand and pick some up with my brush and dab it on my cheeks. It looks really natural...as long as you don't apply too much.

I tried it as well. Was not impressed with the totally unnatural flush plus it stains your finger. Wish I had read this blog before I spent $$$
